Driving Change: New Generation of Sanitation Entrepreneurs Emerging under NAMASTE

Under the Swachhta Udyami Yojana component of the NAMASTE Scheme, five sanitation workers under Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC), Andhra Pradesh viz.  Mr. Bandaru Venkata Narayana, Mr. Tatikonda Rambabu, Mrs. Bandaru Prabhavathi, Mr. Addanki Venkata Ramana, and Mr. Addanki Saraswathi have collectively procured a Special Purpose Vehicle Mounted Suction Machine equipped with a high-vacuum suction system.

The initiative was supported by an upfront capital subsidy of ₹18.75 lakh under NAMASTE, against a total project cost of ₹49.16 lakh. With the vehicle now hired by VMC, the beneficiaries are assured regular work, stable income, and improved occupational safety.

This intervention demonstrates how targeted financial support and mechanisation can enable sanitation workers to transition into safe, dignified, and sustainable livelihoods, setting a strong example for other urban local bodies.

Dignity in Action: Sewer Worker Turned Sanitation Entrepreneur

Shivlal, a Sewer and Septic Tank Worker (SSW ID: 46432861) profiled under the NAMASTE in Udaipurwati Nagar Panchayat, aspired to move away from a sewer and septic tank worker and build a safer, dignified livelihood. With guidance and support under NAMASTE, he transitioned into a sanitation entrepreneur by procuring his own desludging vehicle.

To realise this aspiration, Shivlal received an upfront capital subsidy of ₹4,08,500 under the scheme, contributing to the total vehicle cost of ₹11,34,000. This support enabled him to enter the mechanised sanitation service sector, ensuring greater safety, financial stability, and long-term livelihood security.

Shivlal’s journey exemplifies how NAMASTE is empowering sanitation workers to reclaim dignity, reduce occupational risks, and build sustainable enterprises for a better future.

Mr. Jai Singh

Mr. Jai Singh, 26 years old, is a resident of Ramgarh, Shekhawati, Rajasthan. He was dependent on his father who is a Safai Karamchari. He wanted to take up some work to become self reliant as his previous salary was very low, and he was not able to contribute much in family. He came to know from his friend about the Skill Development Training Programmes of NSKFDC for Safai Karamcharis, Scavengers and their dependants and enrolled for the course of ‘Housekeeper cum Cook’. Mr. Jai Singh successfully completed the training programme of 3 months.  He was offered a private job from Dr. Arora, Homecare, Fatehpur as House Keeper at a salary of Rs 10000/- per month. He feels happy about his decision to enroll for this programme and looks forward to even better career opportunities in future.

Ms. Asha Devi, 34 years old, is a resident of Johripur, New Delhi. She was dependent on her husband who is a Safai Karamchari. She wanted to take up some work to become self reliant.  She came to know from a friend about the Skill Development Training Programmes of NSKFDC for Safai Karamcharis, Scavengers and their dependants and decided to enroll for the course of ‘Unarmed Security Guard’.

Ms. Asha Devi successfully completed the training course of 200 hrs.  She was offered a job from G4S secure solutions at Tronica City as security guard and she is to join on 12.06.2018 at a salary of Rs 14387/- per month.

She is excited about her new job and the fact that better family income would lead to better education for her children.

Ms. Priyanka, 26 years old, is a resident of Bhagirathi Vihar, Dayal Pur, New Delhi. She was dependent on her husband who is a Safai Karamchari. She wanted to take up some work to become self reliant and also contribute to the family income. She came to know about the Skill Development Training Programmes of NSKFDC for the Safai Karamcharis, Scavengers and their dependants and enrolled for the course of ‘Unarmed Security Guard’.

Ms. Priyanka successfully completed the training course of 200 hrs.  She was offered a job from Globe Security solutions at New Delhi Railway Station as security guard at a salary of Rs 12200/- per month besides other benefits. She is proud of her achievement and wants other from the marginalized communities to follow her footprints and become self reliant.

Mr. Karan Pal, 24 years old, is a resident of Vill- Bhmuiya Post-Asra SI, Dist- Badaun-243601 He was dependent on his father who is a Safai Karamchari. He wanted to take up some work to become self reliant as his previous earnings were very low, and he was not able to contribute much in family. He came to know through his friend about the Skill Development Training Programmes for Safai Karamcharis, Scavengers and their dependants and enrolled for the course of ‘MACHINE OPERATOR ASSISTANT- INJECTION MOULDING’.

Mr. Karan Pal successfully completed the training course of 3 months.  He was offered a private job from Poly Plastic Industries Pvt. Ltd. at Pune and presently employed there as a Machine Operator Assistant at a salary of Rs 12000/- per month.

He feels pride of his job and wants others from his community to avail the benefits of such schemes to move up in life.

Ms. Rakhi, 22 years old, is a resident of Sangam Vihar, New Delhi. She was dependent on her father who is a Safai Karamchari. Her father was not able to provide financial assistance for her higher studies. She came to know about the Skill Development Training Programme for Safai Karamcharis, Scavengers and their dependants through an Awareness Camp organized by NSKFDC and enrolled for the course of ‘Commercial Motor Driving’.

Ms. Rakhi successfully completed the training programme of 7 months duration and also learnt self defense and soft skills as integral part of the training programme. After completion of training, she continuously practiced driving and after completion of one year, she was able to obtain the commercial driving license. Now, she is a successful commercial driver and is employed in COLA CABS drawing salary of Rs 17000/- per month. She feels pride of her achievements and wants to encourage her peers, to come forward and avail the benefits of various scheme meant for them.

Ms. Beauty, 23 years old, is a resident of Sangam Vihar, New Delhi. She was dependent on her father who is a Safai Karamchari. She wanted to become self reliant.  She came to know from her friend about the Skill Development Training Programmes of NSKFDC for Safai Karamcharis, Scavengers and their dependants and enrolled for the course of ‘Commercial Motor Driving’.

Ms. Beauty successfully completed the training course of 7 months and also learnt self defense and soft skills as integral part of the training programme. After completion of training, she continuously practiced driving and after completion of one year, she was able to obtain the commercial driving license.  Now, she is a successful commercial driver and is employed with a Private employer at Nehru Place drawing a salary of Rs 9000/- per month.

Mr. Debashis Nath, 41 years old, is a resident of Ward No.33 under Kolkata Municipal Corporation. He used to work as a Safai Karmachari on contract basis in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Apart from working as a Safai Karmachari, he also used to work as a driver on part time basis.  He learnt about the loan scheme of NSKFDC from an awareness camp organised in his area. The WB SC ST Development & Finance Corporation sanctioned loan to him after considering his driving skill, industrious nature and poor economic conditions. He has engaged his vehicle with Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority. His present monthly income is about Rs.26000/- and he is paying the monthly EMI of Rs.15868/- on regular basis. He has one daughter, wife and dependant mother with increased monthly income and he has been able to send his daughter to school. Now, his standard of living has been improved.

Parubehen Chelabhai Bhangi is a resident of Banaskantha district in Gujarat. She is 40 year old, married and illiterate. She was a Safai Kamdar  and used to work in individual households. She is a Hindu and belongs to the Scheduled Caste community. Parubehen had availed loan under Mahila Samridhdhi Yojana. She had availed a loan of Rs. 35000 on 03.03.13 for purchasing Buffalo. Now, she earns a monthly income of Rs. 15000/- and is able to sustain her family of 5 members and provide support to her husband in meeting the monthly expenses through the income she receives from the economic activity. Parubehen was able to improve the living standard of her family. There was delay in repaying the loan amount by her due to poor economic condition of her family.

Satishbhai Ramjibhai Babariya is a resident of Ahmedabad district in Gujarat. He is 52 year old, married and has attained education till primary level. He is a Hindu and belongs to the Scheduled Caste community. Satishbhai was a Safai Karamchari and used to work in a factory prior to the economic activity he is presently involved. He had availed assistance under the Micro Credit Finance scheme. Before receiving assistance, he used to sweep roads and indoors. Satishbhai had availed a loan of Rs. 30000 on 07.01.2013 for selling iron instruments. He used to earn Rs. 4500 monthly while he used to work in the factory but now he earns Rs. 15000 monthly and is able to support his family of 5 members. He is able to support his son’s business and was able to marry his eldest son and eldest daughter with the money he earned through the present economic activity. Satishbhai is a successful beneficiary who has availed loan under NSKFDC schemes.
